Box Score NEWBERRY – The Newberry Wolves women’s soccer team suffered only their third defeat of the season as they lost to league leading Lenoir-Rhyne 3-1 at home on Saturday.
The game featured three goals in the first 14 minutes including a beautiful one by Gabrielle Brodie (Rolleston, Canterbury, New Zealand) but a third goal by the Bears in the 60th minute put the game out of reach for the Wolves.
Newberry (9-3-2, 7-2-1) narrowly trailed in shots, 12-9, and were tied in shots on goal with the Bears as each team had six. Junior midfielder Guadalupe Magana (Santa Paula, Calif.) led the Wolves with 4 shots and two on goal. Midfielders Sarah Sager (Saugus, Calif.) and Casey Wesley (Saugus, Calif.) each had three shots with two on goal.
Lenoir-Rhyne (12-3-1, 9-1-0) had Casey Marlin open the scoring just 3:23 into the game as she received a pass from Leah Mullins just inside the box and put the ball on her left foot and finished to the far post.
It would only take seven minutes for Newberry to answer as senior Brodie put home her sixth goal of the day after she took a touch to put the ball on her other foot and hit a left footed shot that hit the inside of the post and went into the back of the net to make it 1-1.
The Bears went up again just four minutes later when Garcelle Alequine got the ball after Alexis Carillo couldn’t hang onto a cross and put the ball into the net. The game would settle down as the teams would only combined for four shots the rest of the half.
After the break, the two teams traded possession without a real chance until Newberry fouled Lenoir-Rhyne just outside of the box. Brianna Belsky took the direct kick and hit it around the wall and into the upper corner to put the game out of reach.
Newberry will travel to take on Valdosta State on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in their last out of conference matchup.
