Wolves and Bulldogs fight to OT draw

Box Score

WINGATE, N.C. – The Newberry Wolves women’s soccer team went on the road and despite a great defensive effort couldn’t find a winner as they drew with fellow SAC first place team Wingate 0-0 on Friday night.

The Wolves (8-2-2, 6-1-1) have been anchored by a strong defensive effort all season to go along with stout goalkeeping play and they leaned on them to secure a point in a game that pitted the top two defensive teams in the conference against each other.

Junior goalkeeper Alexis Carrillo (La Puente, Calif.) came up huge on the night time and time again as she recorded nine saves on the night.

Offensively, the Wolves had trouble keeping possession but did create a few chances that would have put them ahead on the scoreboard. Junior Guadalupe Magana (Santa Paula, Calif.) had the best chance to break the gridlock for the Wolves as in the 33rd minute.

Lindsay Huber (Selden, N.Y.) played in a corner that was dummied before Rachael Jonas (Camarillo, Calif.) had a shot blocked and the rebound fell to the feet of Magana who settled it but fired a shot from inside the box sailed just over the crossbar.

The nationally ranked defense was called upon all night and got a lights out performance from seniors Elise Sanchez (Tujunga, Calif.) and Amber Sanchez (Tujunga, Calif.) along with Valeria Newcomb (San Diego, Calif.). The trio blocked five shots and forced another 10 of them off target. Newberry has still only allowed a league leading one goal in conference play.

The tie leaves Newberry and Wingate (7-2-3, 6-1-1) are tied atop the table with 19 points and ahead of Lenoir-Rhyne who has 18.

The Wolves will be back in action again on Wednesday afternoon against Coker at the Smith Road Complex at 3 p.m.
