Box Score SAVANNAH, Ga.- The Newberry Wolves women’s soccer team let in an early goal and despite better play and several opportunities in the second half, fell 1-0 to Armstrong State in a battle of regionally ranked teams.
After a slow start, Newberry (8-2-1, 6-1-0) came excruciatingly close to scoring the equalizing goal three times in the contest with all of the chances coming in the second half. The loss marks the first time Newberry has lost on the road this season and their first loss in five games.
Out of the halftime break and trailing, Newberry senior Gabreille Brodie (Rolleston, Canterbury, New Zealand) had a good look on frame after getting in behind the defense but her shot sailed high and just over the crossbar. Later, in the 63rd minute of play, senior Breanna Naranjo (Oxnard, Calif.) got a ball played in over top of the back line and was in on goal but her header glanced just wide of the post.
In the 69th minute, the Wolves had another great opportunity as Rachelle Serrano (Valencia, Calif.) had the ball at the top of the box and with the defense closing in on her fired a shot that ended up in the arms of the Pirates keeper.
For the first time in five games, Newberry conceded a goal to an opponent. That goal also came in the Wolves only other loss of the season which was a 1-0 decision against Lincoln Memorial back on Sept. 20th.
The Pirates (8-5) goal came 14:39 into the game as a through ball bounced through the Wolves defense and Amanda Green scored at the near post from 12 yards out. The Pirates outshot the Wolves 16-10 for the game but the shots were tied at five apiece during the second half.
The Wolves will be back on the road on Friday to take on Wingate at 7 p.m.
