Box Score NEWBERRY – Lucas Ferreira netted a hat trick and the Wolves dominated play as they downed the Chowan Hawks in the second half 4-1 at the Smith Road Complex on Tuesday afternoon.
Ferreira had a career day to help Newberry (5-7-1, 2-4-1) post their highest offensive output of the season for the second straight game with the four goals. Their previous high was in a 7-3 loss against Carson-Newman on Saturday.
Ferreira (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) opened the scoring just over four minutes into the second half at the 49:45 mark as freshman Sterling Wendt (Alphretta, Ga.) swung a ball in from a corner and an unmarked Ferreira climbed the ladder to head it home.
He added to his tally at the 63:01 mark when Chowan was whistled for the penalty kick on a foul after Paul Marie was taken down in the box. Ferreira stepped up and made the keeper guess the wrong way to make it 2-0.
The Wolves pushed their lead to 3-0 as Wendt stretched out to get just enough of a touch on it to lay the ball off and Ferreira promptly buried it at the near post around a defender.
Freshman Paul Marie (Saint-Aubin-des-Bois, France) finished the scoring as he made a run from his own half of the field, turned on the burners and blew past the defense. The keeper came out and Marie hit a beautiful chip from about 15 yards out over the goalie’s head.
Chowan (7-5-0) got a goal back late with just over two minutes left as Nick Lucido (Lakeland, Fla.) made a save on a hard shot but Paul Kamara gathered the rebound and hit one to the far post to get the final score of 4-1.
Newberry will be back in action on Friday as they return to SAC play at Wingate at 4:30 p.m.
