Box Score NEWBERRY – The Newberry Wolves women’s soccer team took care of business at home on Saturday afternoon beating the visiting Carson-Newman Eagles 4-0 at the Smith Road Complex.
Senior Breanna Naranjo (Oxnard, Calif.) scored two goals while Gabrielle Brodie (Rolleston, Canterbury, New Zealand) and Sabrina Serafin (Northridge, Calif.) also got their names on the scoresheet.
Naranjo got her first goal of the season 15:47 into the game as Brodie fed her the ball and she put a cool finish on it from 10 yards out to put the Wolves up 1-0. She doubled the lead a little less than five minutes later as she fired a shot and left the Eagles keeper with no chance and Newberry never looked back.
Brodie scored her fourth goal of the season at the 76:46 mark as the Eagles goalkeeper Taylor Hammond couldn’t corral a cross and the ball squirted out only for Brodie to capitalize for a couple yards away with a side volley.
Newberry made their first attempt to make the score 4-0 as senior Brayden Miller (Lyman, S.C.) played a ball across that just missed connected with freshman Morgan Powers (Charleston, S.C.) but they wouldn’t be denied.
With the clocked ticking under 10 seconds left in the match and the countdown underway, Serafin took a shot from 30 yards out. The ball flew over the keeper’s head and under the crossbar as time expired to make it 4-0. It was Serafin’s team-high fifth goal of the season.
Newberry outshot the visitors 15-6 including 6-3 in shots on target. Junior goalkeeper Alexis Carrillo (La Puente, Calif.) made three comfortable saves and the defense kept the Eagles from ever really threating to get themselves into the game.
The Wolves will travel to Savannah, Ga. To take on Armstrong State in a nonconference matchup on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
