Box Score HICKORY, N.C. - Newberry sophomore Rebecca Darley recorded her second straight clean sheet in goal as the Wolves rode goals from senior Ashley Reetz and junior Breanna Naranjo to a 2-0 victory over Lees-McRae in the L-R Classic.
The Wolves (2-0) attacked from the opening whistle for the second game in a row as Reetz (Charleston, S.C.) recorded the days' first shot 44 seconds into the match. Newberry saw the Bobcats fire off a pair of shots to close out the opening ten minutes, before the Wolves regained control of the momentum.
In the 26th minute Newberry opened the afternoon's scoring as junior Gabrielle Brodie (Rolleston, Canterbury, New Zealand) sent a pass down the left side of the field to Naranjo (Oxnard, Calif.). Naranjo took advantage of the breakaway opportunity and slotted home her first goal in a Newberry shirt.
The final 20 minutes of the opening half saw the Wolves fire off five more shots before the halftime whistle sounded.
Lees-McRae opened the second period looking to even the score, as the Bobcats managed to get four shots off before the 63rd minute. It was in the 63rd minute that Brodie collected her second assist of the afternoon as she played a ball to the feet of Reetz, who scored her first goal since returning from a redshirt season.
Newberry continued to attack as the clock ran down, forcing Bobcats goalie Alicia Pierson to make three saves in the final 20 minutes.
Reetz's second half strike was her first goal since the 2011 SAC Semifinals and is her 11th career goal. Brodie's two assists give her 37 points on her career, which moves her into a tie for eighth most points in school history with Amberly Fowler.
In goal Darley totaled four saves as she picked up her second clean sheet and second win of the year. Darley's clean sheet gives her four in her career.
The Wolves will play their first ever match at the new Smith Road Complex soccer pitch on Saturday, when Newberry opens conference play with a 1:30 showdown with Mars Hill.
