Wolves fall to Lindenwood, 8-2

Box Score

NEWBERRY - The Newberry Wolves field hockey team scored two second half goals, but a late first half flurry by the visiting Lindenwood Lady Lions was too much to overcome, as the guests earned an 8-2 victory at Setzler Field on Saturday afternoon.

Newberry falls to 0-4 with the loss and hosts Bellarmine (Ky.) at noon Sunday.

The Wolves contained the Lady Lions for large stretches of the first half, as it was only a 1-0 game with 22 minutes gone, but Lindenwood scored four goals in the final 12 minutes of the half to take a 5-0 lead at the break.

LU scored another goal early in the second half, but Newberry played the guests evenly from there.

Karissa Dodson (Glen Burnie, Md.) scored her second goal of the season in the 49th minute, notching the final notch before the net after a scramble following a penalty corner. Anna Kate Smith (Gaithersburg, Md.) and Caitlyn Warren (Richmond, Va.) recorded assists on the play.

Lindenwood scored two in quick succession but just before the final horn, Smith scored her first goal at Newberry on a tap-in with Caitlyn Warren and Kaitlyn Willard (Stevensville, Md.) recording assists.

Newberry out-cornered LU 12-7, but the Lady Lions outshot Newberry by a 3-14 count.

Newberry goalkeeper Morgan Downey (Millersville, Md.) had her highest save percentage of the season and made 10 saves.
