Box Score NEWBERRY - A goal from a nearly impossible angle by junior Brayden Miller was the difference maker for the Newberry women's soccer team as the Wolves topped the Brevard Tornados 1-0 at the Smith Road Complex.
The first half saw Newberry (4-2, 2-1 SAC)) control the possession as junior Gabrielle Brodie (Rolleston, Canterbury, New Zealand) launched the first shot of the afternoon in the third minute, but saw it blocked by the Brevard (3-4, 0-2 SAC) defense. Brodie's shot resulted in a corner kick for the Wolves, which saw Brevard goalkeeper Brittany Webster forced to make a save on a shot by junior Sabrina Serafin (Northridge, Calif.).
The Wolves continued to pepper the goal in the opening half as the Wolves outshot Brevard 6-1 in the first period. Newberry's offensive onslaught did not leave the Wolves empty handed when Miller (Lyman, S.C.) created an opportunity inside the 18-yard box and curled a shot toward the back post, which clipped the woodwork and bounced into the goal to give Newberry a 1-0 lead.
Miller's 43rd minute goal was not the final attack for Newberry as junior Sarah Sager (Saugus, Calif.) sent a shot high before the halftime whistle.
The Wolves continued to attack as the second half began as junior Amber Sanchez (Tujunga, Calif.) sent a shot just wide of the post, in the 48th minute. Junior Breanna Naranjo (Oxnard, Calif.) saw a 55th minute shot blocked, shortly before Sager saw a shot saved. Newberry placed two shots on frame in the second period, but saw both turned away by Webster, including a try from Miller that Webster got a finger on and tipped the ball off the cross bar.
On the afternoon, Newberry outshot Brevard 13-6 and earned a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Miller's goal was her second of the season and marks back-to-back games with a goal for the junior. In goal, sophomore Rebecca Darley (Wolcott, Conn.) recorded her fourth clean sheet of the season. Darley's four clean sheets are fourth most in a season at Newberry.
The Wolves continue their home stand on Saturday as Newberry plays host to Catawba at 1:30 p.m. at the Smith Road Complex.
