Miller tallies as Wolves fall 2-1 to Lady Railsplitters

Box Score

HARROGATE, Tenn. - A late second half strike from junior Brayden Miller was not enough for the Newberry women's soccer team as the Wolves fell 2-1 on the road against the Lincoln Memorial Lady Railsplitters.

The Wolves (3-2-0, 1-1-0 SAC) opened the afternoon on the attack with a header in the fourth minute by junior Breanna Naranjo (Oxnard, Calif.) that was turned away by the LMU keeper. A mass of substitutions by the Lady Rail Splitters (3-1-1, 2-0-0 SAC) in the 23rd minute changed the momentum of the half as a foul by Naranjo allowed for fresh substitute Marissa Kiernan to find the head of Michelle Hunter for a set piece goal. LMU struck again in the 30th when Nicole McKinney caught a break as a shot off the post from 30 yards out redirected into the goal.

Leading 2-0 at half, LMU continued to attack as the second half began. Lincoln Memorial fired off three early shots, but saw two miss the frame and one turned away by Newberry's sophomore goalkeeper Rebecca Darley (Wolcott, Conn.).

The 71st minute saw the Wolves turn the tables and go on the attack. A header by junior Amber Sanchez (Tujunga, Calif.) sailed wide of the goal, before the Wolves earned a corner kick off the possession. A 72nd minute corner by junior Rachael Jonas (Camarillo, Calif.), eventually found the feet of Sanchez who quickly passed the ball to Miller (Lyman, S.C.). The crafty junior slotted a shot into the upper-90 for her first goal of the season and 11th of her career.

Miller's goal looked to swing the momentum the Wolves' way, but a red card saw Newberry play the final 12 minutes with ten players.

The Wolves were led offensively by Miller, Naranjo and freshman Kelly Cardew (Spartanburg, S.C.), all of whom had two shots. Darley recorded four saves in goal for Newberry.

Newberry returns home on Wednesday where the Wolves host Brevard at 1:30 p.m.
