Reetz strikes for Wolves in 2-1 loss to Crusaders

Box Score

BELMONT, N.C. - Newberry senior Ashley Reetz scored her second goal of the season, as the Wolves fell for the first time in 2013 in a 2-1 loss at Belmont Abbey.

Ranked No. 4 in the Southeast Region, Newberry (3-1) traveled to regional No. 6 Belmont Abbey (4-1) and quickly saw the Crusaders take to the attack. Despite two early shots by junior Brayden Miller (Lyman, S.C.), Belmont Abbey peppered the Newberry goal in the 19th minute. Wolves' sophomore goalkeeper Rebecca Darley (Wolcott, Conn.) stopped two straight shots before Meghan Philip struck off the second rebound to put the Crusaders up 1-0.

The second half saw Belmont Abbey's Ananda Gebreyesus score the second goal of the match in the 46th minute. Newberry pulled one back in the 53rd when Reetz (Charleston, S.C.) gathered a pass from junior Gabrielle Brodie (Rolleston, Canterbury, New Zealand) and slipped it past the Crusaders' goalie for her second goal of the year.

Reetz looked to add to her goal total seconds after her goal with a high shot, followed less than a minute later by a shot that was blocked by the Belmont Abbey defense.

Newberry forced Hannha Kohls to make four saves after the Wolves' goal was scored.

The Wolves outshot the Crusaders 17-10 on the afternoon.

Reetz's goal was the 12th of her career, while Brodie's assist was her fourth of the year. Brodie's assist gives her 39 points in her career, which gives her the seventh most points in a career by a Newberry player. Brodie now sits three points behind Jami Schliesman's 42 points from 1997-98.

The Wolves hit the road to Harrogate, Tenn. for a 1 p.m. conference showdown with Lincoln Memorial.
