Wolves fall to nationally-ranked Limestone in semifinals of ECAC Tournament

ST. CHARLES, Mo. - The Newberry Wolves played in the first postseason game in the field hockey program's brief history, falling 7-2 to the nationally-ranked and top-seeded Limestone Saints in the semifinals of the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division II Field Hockey Invitational at Lindenwood University's Hunter Stadium.

Newberry will now wrap up its inaugural season in the consolation game of the ECAC Tournament against third-seeded Bellarmine at 11 a.m. Central on Sunday.

In the third meeting between South Carolina's two field hockey schools this season, it was the Saints who scored the first four goals, racing out to an early lead.

Newberry got its first goal of the night in the 28th minute when Katie Thompson (Newark, Del.) scored the first goal of her collegiate career on an assist from Alisha Locklear (Glen Burnie, Md.) after a penalty corner. Limestone took a 5-1 lead into the halftime break and also scored the first goals in the second half.

Kaitlyn Willard (Stevensville, Md.) wrapped up the scoring in the 54th minute with her fifth goal of the season. Newberry tooke four more shots in the rest of the game, but could not find the back of the net.

Goalkeeper Morgan Downey (Millersville, Md.) made 13 saves in the contest as the Wolves fell to 0-14 on the season.
