Brodie scores insurance goal as Wolves top Royals 2-0

Box Score

NEWBERRY - An own goal proved to be the game winner for the Newberry women's soccer team before Gabrielle Brodie added an insurance goal in the Wolves' 2-0 victory over the visiting Queens Royals.

The Wolves (5-4, 3-2 SAC) saw the eventual game winner bounce into the back of the goal in the tenth minute of the match. Junior Brayden Miller (Lyman, S.C.) sent a high cross toward the front of the goal mouth as she looked to find the head of fellow junior Breanna Naranjo (Oxnard, Calif.). A Queens (6-2-2, 2-1-2 SAC) defender managed to get her head on the ball first, but saw her clearance attempt flicked back toward the goal and by goalkeeper Kelsey Seretis.

There was no question about the goal scorer for the Wolves' second goal as Brodie (Rolleston, Canterbury, New Zealand) found herself with the ball just inside the Wolves' defensive half. Brodie weaved through the Queens' midfield and defense and found herself with space just inside the penalty area. In the 37th minute Brodie notched hr second goal of the season with a far post shot by Seretis.

The second period saw Queens test Newberry's sophomore goalkeeper Rebecca Darley (Wolcott, Conn.) with two early shots, but soon saw the Wolves fire a pair of shots of their own. Newberry continued to pepper the Queens defense with shots as the Wolves notched 13 second period shots.

Queens' defense and strong play from Seretis kept the Wolves from adding to their goal total as the final whistle blew on a 2-0 Newberry victory.

Naranjo led the Wolves with six shots, while Brodie led with three shots on goal. Darley recorded five saves in her fifth clean sheet of the season.

Newberry's schedule continues on Wednesday October 9 as the Wolves travel to Anderson for a 2 p.m. match with the Trojans.
