Box Score NEWBERRY - The Newberry Wolves had a solid offensive effort but their shots could not find the back of the net, as the Mercy Mavericks defeated Newberry 7-3 at Setzler Field on Saturday.
Newberry is now 0-6 on the year and visits Dowling (N.Y.) next Friday and Millersville (Pa.) next Sunday.
The Wolves outshot Mercy 17 shots to 14 in the game, but the Mavericks scored on an early penalty corner and two shots on scrambles in the 20th minute to take a 3-0 halftime lead.
The Mavericks scored in the opening seconds of the second half before Newberry's shots finally resulted in goals. The twin power of Caitlyn Warren and Courtlyn Warren (Richmond, Va.) teamed up again in the 41st minute, as Caitlyn scored her fourth goal of the season off of a penalty corner situation.
Just five minutes later, the Wolves cut the deficit to 4-2 as Kaitlyn Willard (Stevensville, Md.) scored her first collegiate goal on an assist from Anna Kate Smith (Gaithersburg, Md.). Mercy scored shortly thereafter, but Caitlyn Warren scored her second goal of the game and fifth of the season with just over 10 minutes remaining.
Unfortunately for the Wolves, the Mavericks converted on a corner a few minutes later and scored on a penalty stroke on the match's final play to record the win.
Newberry kept the pressure on the Mavericks for the entire match, with 10 penalty corners and 11 shots in the second half.
