Box Score GAFFNEY - A two-goal performance by junior Breanna Naranjo pushed Newberry to a 2-1 victory over Limestone at Saints Field on Tuesday afternoon.
Newberry (9-7) opened the match with an early shot from junior Sarah Sager (Saugus, Calif.) and continued to attack as the Wolves were flagged for offside ten minutes after Sager's first shot of the match. The offside call against Newberry sparked Limestone (4-8-3), as the Saints followed up with a shot minutes after.
Newberry continued to test the Limestone defense as junior Gabrielle Brodie (Rolleston, Canterbury, New Zealand) saw her 29th minute shot saved by Limestone's Whitney Salonich.
The Wolves forced Salonich to record a pair of saves before the Saints subbed Mariette Martinez into the goalkeeper position in the 39th minute. Martinez had little time to get comfortable between the posts as junior Breanna Naranjo (Oxnard, Calif.) and Sager forced her to make back-to-back saves in the 41st minute.
Minutes after forcing Martinez to make her first save of the match; Naranjo got the best of the Limestone keeper. After beating the Limestone defense on her own, Naranjo saw her 45th minute try deflect off Martinez into the goal to give Newberry a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
The second period opened with Newberry quickly testing Martinez, before Limetone turned around and attacked on Newberry's back-up goalkeeper sophomore Brittany Singleton (Canton, N.C.). Singleton stopped Limestone's first attempt of he second period, but a chip shot from Tori Waddell beat Singleton in the 55th minute as the Saints knotted the match at 1-1.
Limestone looked to continue it's offensive attack as the Saints followed Waddell's goal with a shot two minutes later. Newberry soon regained its footing and began to control the possession as the Wolves fired off three shots in the span of four minutes.
Both teams pushed to break the tie, but were unable to do so before Newberry took advantage of an opportunity in the 86th minute. A corner kick from junior Rachael Jonas (Camarillo, Calif.) deflected off a Limestone defender in front of the goal mouth and was headed into the goal by Naranjo for the juniors first multi-goal match of her Newberry career.
Naranjo's second goal would be all Newberry needed as the Wolves defense held Limestone without a shot on frame for the remaining minutes of the match.
Newberry outshot Limestone 15-7, as the Saints' keepers were forced to record nine saves.
Naranjo led the Wolves with four shots on her way to the brace, while Sager finished the day with three shots. In goal, Singleton tallied one save in her first match as a collegiate goalkeeper.
The Wolves wrap-up the 2013 regular season on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. when the Wolves host Tusculum on Senior Day. Newberry will honor seniors Ashley Reetz (Charleston, S.C.) and Lauren Singleton (Charleston, S.C.) as part of its Senior Day festivities.
