Ortiz, Murphy score in Wolves' 5-2 loss to Flying Fleet

Box Score

DUE WEST - Senior Christian Ortiz scored the first goal of his career, as sophomore Bennett Murphy joined him in the scorers' column in Newberry's 5-2 loss to the Erskine Flying Fleet.

Erskine (4-4-1) went on the attack early and opened the scoring in the 14th minute, before doubling its lead over the Wolves (1-7-1) in the 21st. The Flying Fleet was not done with the offensive display as Erskine scored goals number three and four in the 30th and 31st minutes, respectively. Erskine finished its scoring in the 45th minute to head to halftime with a 5-0 lead.

The second half started with Erskine again on the attack, as the Flying Fleet forced Newberry junior Nicholas Lucido (Lakeland, Florida) to make a trio of saves in the opening ten minutes. Newberry managed to gain control of the ball in the 59th minute as senior Jay Barajas (Atlanta, Ga.) notched the Wolves' first shot of the second period. Soon after Barajas' shot, Ortiz (Atlanta, Ga.) saw an opportunity and scored his first collegiate goal.

Newberry looked to continue its attack following Ortiz's goal as Erskine's Drew Coracoran was forced to make back-to-back saves in the 69th and 70th minutes. The 73rd minute saw the Wolves notch a second goal as Murphy (Hilton Head, S.C.) scored his first goal of the season.

Neither team was able to get the offense going following Murphy's strike, giving Erskine a 5-2 victory over the visiting Wolves.

Lucido recorded seven saves in the loss.

The Wolves return home on Saturday as Newberry hosts Queens at 4 p.m.
