NEWBERRY - Sophomore goalkeeper Rebecca Darley recorded five saves as the Wolves fell 2-0 to Wingate at the Smith Road Complex on Saturday afternoon.
The Bulldogs (10-1-3, 6-1-1 SAC) beat Darley (Wolcott, Conn.) for the first time early as the first shot placed on frame found the back of the net. In the 12th minute, Wingate's Jade Montgomery flicked a header on to an overlapping Chandler Murphy whose cross toward the goal mouth was hammered into the roof of the goal by Brooke Howell.
Newberry (8-5, 5-3 SAC) looked to respond, but saw all four of its shots in the first half sail wide of the goal. The Wolves were outshot 7-4 in the opening period.
The second half proved to be more of the same as Howell slotted a pass to Naomi Matley outside the penalty area, which Matley placed inside the far post for a 50th minute goal to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 advantage.
The Wolves again saw few offensive opportunities in the second period as Newberry recorded only two shots in the second half. It was senior Ashley Reetz (Charleston, S.C.) who forced Wingate's Ashlyn Hardie to make her only save of the day, shortly after Matley's goal.
Newberry was outshot 14-6 on the day, while Darley tallied five saves in the defeat.
The Wolves travel to Coker on Wednesday for a 4:30 p.m. match against the Cobras in the first SAC match between the two sides.
