Lucido, Butler score as Wolves fall in overtime to Patriots

Box Score

FLORENCE - A stunning second half comeback was not enough for the Newberry men's soccer team as the Wolves fell 3-2 in overtime to Francis Marion, despite goals from sophomore Anthony Lucido and freshman Jalin Butler.

Francis Marion (6-2-3) controlled the opening period as the Patriots outshot the Wolves (1-11-1) 16-2 and forced Newberry's senior goalkeeper Patrick Sweatt (Indian Land, S.C.) to make nine first half saves.

The Wolves turned things around late in the second period as freshman Graham Jermstad (Irmo, S.C.) sent a through ball toward the penalty area, which was collected by Lucido (Lakeland, Fla.). In the 79th minute it was Lucido who beat Francis Marion goalkeeper Logan Fisher for his second goal of the year.

Jermstad was not finished handing out assists as he completed the task again in the waning seconds of the match. After drawing a foul in the 90th minute, Jermstad sent a free kick into the box that was headed into the back of the net by Butler (Columbia, S.C.) to send the match into overtime.

Overtime proved a short affair as Francis Marion netted the game winner a little over a minute into the period.

Jermstad's two assists are the first two of his collegiate career and give the freshman a team high 10 points on the season. Lucido and Butler are sitting on five and six points, respectively. Sweatt notched 10 saves in goal for the Wolves.

Newberry returns home Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. conference showdown with Wingate.
