Wolves edged by Dowling, 5-4

BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. - In a battle of first-year programs, the Newberry Wolves were handed a tough defeat, losing 5-4 to the Dowling Golden Lions on Friday afternoon.

Newberry is now 0-7 on the year entering Sunday's game at No. 2 Millersville (Pa.).

The Wolves were on the offensive for most of the game, firing off 23 shots to Dowling's 15, but only 12 were on goal, while Dowling had 13 on goal.

Newberry had 17 penalty corners in the game, with three resulting in goals.

The Wolves opened the scoring in the 13th minute, when Courtlyn Warren (Richmond, Va.) scored following a penalty corner, with twin sister Caitlyn Warren (Richmond, Va.) assisting.

Dowling scored a pair of goals in quick succession in the 15th and 16th minutes, but Anna Kate Smith (Gaithersburg, Md.) tapped in a shot from close range in the 17th minute to tie the game at 2-all.

The end of the half saw a flurry of goals, as the Golden Lions retook the lead in the 31st minute after a series of penalty corners.

Caitlyn Warren tied up the game a minute later with a penalty stroke goal. Dowling carried a 4-3 lead into the halftime break with a goal just two minutes before the buzzer.

In the second half, Dowling scored after a short breakaway in the 49th minute to make it a 5-3 lead.

From there, Newberry would rack up eight shots and eight penalty corners, while Dowling could only manage two shots in the final 20 minutes.

Kaitlyn Willard (Stevensville, Md.) scored from close range in the 67th minute, but that was the only goal the Wolves could manage from the intense offensive pressure, giving Dowling the win.

Newberry goalkeeper Morgan Downey (Millersville, Md.) had eight saves in the contest.
