Box Score BELMONT, N.C. - Despite eight saves by freshman goalkeeper Rebecca Darley, the Newberry women's soccer team was handed its first loss of 2012 as Belmont Abbey topped the Wolves 1-0.
The Wolves (2-1-1) and Crusaders exchanged scoring opportunities in the opening half, with the Wolves testing the Belmont Abbey goalkeeper for the first time in 31st minute when sophomore Gabrielle Brodie (Rolleston, Canterbury, New Zealand) forced Belmont Abbey's Hannah Kohls to make her first save of the match.
Cassidy Coutinho scored the lone goal of the match in the 49th minute, before Brodie threatened again in the 64th minute when she made Kohls react to another shot on frame.
The Wolves were outshot 14-11 by the Crusaders, while Belmont Abbey also held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Brodie led the Wolves with six shots and placed three on frame, while sophomore Brayden Miller (Lyman, S.C.) added four shots of her own. Darley (Wolcott, Conn.) recorded eight saves for the Wolves, posting four saves in each half.
The Wolves return to action on Monday when Newberry plays host to Queens at 3 p.m.
