Sas scores beauty in Wolves' 5-1 win over Eagles

Box Score

NEWBERRY - The Newberry women's soccer team scored early and often as the Wolves dispatched the visiting Carson-Newman Eagles 5-1 on Saturday, led by a goal and two assist performance from sophomore Brayden Miller.

In the 10th minute senior Katie Sas (Columbia, S.C.) corralled a corner kick from fellow senior Amber Chase (Aiken, S.C.) atop the 18-yard box and hit a rocket across the goal mouth into the far top corner of the goal to score her first goal of the year.

Two minutes later it was Miller (Lyman, S.C.) who struck with an angled chip shot effort from inside the 18-yard box. Miller's tally was her third of the season.

The following minute, Miller slotted a pass to Chase, who sent a curling ball into the far top corner for her second goal of the season.

Carson-Newman answered with a goal of its own in the 34th minute, when Sylvia Palermo scored off a Samantha Thomsi assist.

Newberry outshot Carson-Newman 7-2 in the opening period.

The Wolves scored again early in the second half when a Miller pass found senior Cassie Smith (Spartanburg, S.C.) sliding in to finish the ball from Miller. Smith's goal was her first of the season.

In the 64th minute of play, sophomore Gabrielle Brodie completed an impressive individual performance when she recovered a turnover 20 yards into the defensive end of the pitch. Brodie proceeded to march down the pitch taking on up to two defenders at a time, before beating the Eagles keeper one-on-one for her sixth goal of the year.

The Wolves outshot Carson-Newman 11-8 on the match, and earned four corners to the Eagles three.

Newberry next heads to Wingate for a 5 p.m. SAC meeting with the Bulldogs on Wednesday.
