Box Score NEWBERRY - It took a half to get going, but once they did the Newberry women's soccer team tallied five second half goals in route to a 5-0 victory over the Bob Jones University Bruins.
The Wolves (1-0-1) threatened early in the match with 11 shots, forcing BJU's goalkeeper to record five first half saves. It wasn't until Newberry head coach Karrie Miller shook up the lineup that the Wolves were able to beat the keeper and start the scoring onslaught.
The lineup changes for the Wolves saw starting goalkeeper Morgan Cox (Perth, Western Australia, Australia) replace freshman Lauren Hensley (Fort Mill, S.C.) as a field player, while back-up keeper Rebecca Darley (Wolcott, Conn.) filled in between the posts.
In the 56th minute of play it was Cox who headed home a free kick from sophomore Gabrielle Brodie (Rolleston, Canterbury, New Zealand). Only six minutes after Cox scored the Wolves' first goal of the season, she added to her stat line when she cut back with the ball at her feet just outside the 18-yard box and slotted a pass to sophomore Brayden Miller (Lyman, S.C.) who rocketed a shot just under the cross bar from atop the 18.
Already with an assist to her name, Brodie curled a free kick inside the far post from about 25 yards for her first goal of the season in the 69th minute. A minute after Brodie's first goal, she notched her second assist on a low pass to senior Amber Chase (Aiken, S.C.) who slid the shot into the back of the net to put the Wolves up 4-0.
Brodie finished out her impressive day in the 90th minute when the Kiwi went one-on-one with the Bruins back-up keeper and slid the shot past the diving keeper.
Newberry outshot the Bruins 23-2 and finished the match with an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks.
The Wolves continue a short run at home on Wednesday when they play host to Limestone at 3 p.m.
