MARS HILL, N.C. - Despite outshooting the Mars Hill Lions, the Newberry women's soccer team was unable to find the back of the net in a 2-0 loss on Friday.
The Lions (5-9, 2-5 SAC) opened the scoring early when Leah Taylor headed in her second goal of the season in the second minute. The Wolves (4-6-3, 1-4-2 SAC) pressured Mars Hill, following the opening goal until the 27th minute when Grace Lancaster headed in the second goal of the match for Mars Hill.
Newberry peppered the Mars Hill goal in the final minutes of the second period as sophomores Gabrielle Brodie (Rolleston, Canterbury, New Zealand) and Brayden Miller (Lyman, S.C.) combined for five shots in the final eight minutes of the half.
The second half saw the two teams trade opportunities, but saw neither team breakthrough. Newberry saw a late offensive opportunity fall short as the Wolves won a corner kick, but ran out of time to make anything of the chance.
Newberry outshot Mars Hill 18-15, and won six corner kicks to the Lions' 4. Newberry freshman goalkeeper Rebecca Darley (Wolcott, Conn.) recorded seven saves, while Miller and Brodie fired off eight and six shots each, respectively.
The Wolves return home on Monday for a non-conference meeting with Lees-McRae at 3 p.m.
