Chase scores as Wolves drop 3-1 match to Flagler

Box Score

NEWBERRY - When rain began to fall on the Newberry Soccer Field the Flagler Saints heated up netting two second half goals to defeat the Newberry Wolves 3-1.

The scoring opened in the 13th minute as Flagler's Loren Cate created space atop the 18-yard box and blasted a shot past Newberry keeper Emily Rhoades (Buckley, Wash.). The goal was the eighth of the season for Cate.

Newberry (5-2-0) countered the Saints (6-2-0) in the 16th minute when freshman Mary Stanton (Greenville, S.C.) sent a long cross just outside the six-yard box that was flicked into the goal by junior Amber Chase (Aiken, S.C.). Chase's goal was her first of the season.

It appeared the match was headed to overtime until the rain began to fall around the 80th minute. A through ball by Flagler led to a challenge by Newberry goalkeeper Megan Hrenchir (Lawrence, Kan.) that drew the redshirt senior a red card from the official. With Hrenchir sent off, Rhoades returned to the match were she surrendered a penalty kick goal in the 81st minute to Lindsay Zullo of Flagler.

Zullo was not finished and scored from the run of play in the 87th minute when she dribbled through the Wolves defense and beat Rhoades from a tight angle inside the 18-yard box. Zullo's second goal of the afternoon was her sixth of the season.

Newberry returns to action on Wednesday at Mars Hill for a conference match scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
