ANDERSON - Newberry picked up its second win of the South Atlantic Conference season in a 2-1 decision over Anderson thanks to an 89th minute goal by freshman Mary Stanton.

The first half between the Wolves and Trojans ended without a goal despite both teams getting good looks before the ball was cleared by a defender. The Trojans had an early opportunity in the 10th minute when Jessica Kleinberg snuck a shot past senior goalkeeper Emily Rhoades (Buckley, Wash.), but the ball was cleared away by senior defender Kristin Stensholt (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia).

Only six minutes later Stanton (Greenville, S.C.) had a shot touched by goalkeeper Kaitlyn Neipp. Despite the save by Neipp the shot from Stanton continued to roll toward the goal mouth, but was cleared by an Anderson defender.

The Trojans struck early in the second half when Anderson caught the Wolves off guard and a well placed pass from Krystal Goss found Summer Miller, who placed the shot past Rhoades in the 51st minute.

Newberry looked to equalize in the 61st minute when Stanton flicked a shot onto goal, but a deflection pushed the ball off the crossbar before it was cleared from danger by the Anderson defense.

The Wolves were able to hold off Anderson's pursuit of a second goal and knotted things up when a ball off the foot of freshman Brayden Miller (Lyman, S.C.) found its way through to junior Tiffany Kinner (North Myrtle Beach, S.C.) who was able to put the ball into the net for her fourth goal of the season in the 82nd minute.

Newberry continued its attack when Miller sent a cross into the box to an unmarked Stanton who headed the ball in for her fourth of the season in the 89th minute.

The Wolves continue the 2011 season on Sunday at home against Flagler at 1 p.m. The match will be the first between Flagler and Newberry in the history of the two programs.
