Box Score ROCK HILL - The Newberry women's soccer team had its season ended Friday evening in a 5-2 loss to Wingate in the semifinals of the 2011 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Soccer Championship.
Newberry (12-7) surrendered a 20th minute goal when Wingate's (15-3) Kelly Adams struck from 20 yards out. The Wolves countered eight minutes later on a corner kick. A well struck ball from senior Jesse Langdon (Raleigh, N.C.) was flicked on by junior Cassie Smith (Spartanburg, S.C.) and placed in the back of the net by freshman Mar Stanton (Greenville, S.C.). The goal was the 12th of the season for Stanton.
The Bulldogs regained the lead in the second half on a 58th minute goal from Chandler Murphy. Wingate's Jade Montgomery netted a third goal for the Bulldogs in the 62nd minute.
Newberry looked to have drawn a penalty, but was instead given a free kick on the edge of the 18-yard box. Junior Ashley Reetz (Charleston, S.C.) stepped up and placed her shot over the wall and under the crossbar for her fourth goal of the season.
The Wolves were unable to carry momentum from Reetz's goal as Casey King scored for Wingate in the 78th minute before Montgomery added a second goal in the 89th minute.
Newberry was outshot 20-9 by Wingate.
In goal senior Emily Rhoades (Buckley, Wash.) recorded one save, while senior Megan Hrenchir recorded two saves as a substitute.
Newberry wraps up the season with a 12-7 record and reached the SAC semifinals for the second straight season.
