Box Score NEWBERRY - The Newberry women's soccer team advanced to the semifinals of the 2011 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Soccer Championships by defeating Lincoln Memorial 4-0 on the back of a two-goal performance by freshman Gabrielle Brodie.
Brodie's (Rolleston, Canterbury, New Zealand) first goal came in the 40th minute when she received a pass from junior Cassie Smith (Spartanburg, S.C.). The Newberry (12-6-0) freshman fired a shot at LMU (8-8-2) keeper Kayla Hanson and was initially denied before placing the rebound into the goal for her fourth goal of the season.
Brodie added an assist in the 45th minute when she slotted a pass to junior Amber Chase (Aiken, S.C.) who chipped the ball over Hanson from about 10 yards out. Chase's tally was her third of the year.
It was in the 52nd minute that Brodie completed the double when senior Meagan Heney (Ajax, Ontario, Canada) sent a low ball across the goal mouth that Brodie placed into the far side of the goal from about 10 yards. Brodie's second goal was her fifth of the season, and her first multi-goal game of her collegiate career.
Another freshman added to the Wolves goal total in the 70th minute after junior Theresa Berman sent a long ball into space that was run on by freshman Brayden Miller (Lyman, S.C.). Miller beat Hanson one-on-one for her fifth goal of the year.
Newberry outshot Lincoln Memorial 15-8 on the afternoon.
Seniors Emily Rhoades (Buckley, Wash.) and Megan Hrenchir (Lawrence, Kan.) combined to keep a clean sheet in goal, with both keepers forced to make one save each. Hanson recorded four saves for LMU.
The win puts Newberry into the semifinals of the 2011 Food Lion SAC Soccer Championships on Friday night at 6 p.m. Newberry will play the winner of the fourth quarterfinal match between Catawba and Wingate. Friday's match will be played at Manchester Meadows in Rock Hill, S.C.
