Men's soccer shut out 4-0 by No. 21 Montevallo

MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The Newberry College men's soccer team dropped a decisive 4-0 match to the nationally ranked No. 21 Montevallo University Falcons here Wednesday night.

Montevallo (3-0) jumped out to an early lead on a Phil Jackson 45 yard shot that bounced over the head of Newberry (0-2) goalie Patrick Sweatt (Indian Land, S.C.) in the 20th minute and never looked back en route to handing the Wolves their first shutout of the season.

The Falcons snuck in one more goal before the half when Michael Riggle poked in a James Steer cross to make it 2-0 Falcons heading into the locker room.

The Wolves allowed two more goals in the second half as Alex Ghoja and Gary O'Neill scored in the 52nd and 55th minutes on Newberry goalie Joel Johnson (Sangre Grande, Trinidad and Tobego).

Newberry freshman Zackary Epstein (Daniel Island, S.C.) took two of the four shots for the Wolves on the night as well as two of the team's three shots on goal. Sophomore Adrian Ochoa (East Point, Ga.) took the only other shot on target.

Sweatt and Johnson combined to save eight shots compared to the Falcons' three.

The men will return home for their South Atlantic Conference opener this Saturday, Sept. 11, as they take on Mars Hill at 4 p.m.
