Wolves drop home opener 2-1 to Saints

Box Score

NEWBERRY - Despite jumping out to an early lead, the Newberry College women's soccer team failed to put the finishing touch on Limestone College, dropping its 2010 home opener, 2-1 here, Wednesday afternoon.

Newberry (0-3-0) sophomore Cassie Smith (Lyman, S.C.) punched in the team's first goal of the season just one minute into the contest off of an errant Limestone (1-2-0) blocked shot that found the back corner of the net for a 1-0 Wolves lead.

But the Saints didn't stay down for long as Tillman Fennell sent a long range shot sailing past Newberry goalkeeper Emily Rhoades (Buckley, Wash.) shortly before the half for the equalizer.

After a stalemate coming out of the intermission, Limestone junior Vanessa Jarrett snuck in the game winning goal for the Saints off of a Diane Boyce corner kick in the 58th minute to give Limestone the win.

“We just weren't ready to play from minute one,” said Newberry head coach Karrie Miller. “We just couldn't get the game momentum going our way to take control late. We played a lot of kick ball and lost a lot of the 50-50 opportunities and that all comes down to effort. If there is one positive it's that we took more shots.”

After taking just three shots in their first two games, the Wolves outshot the Saints 26-6 and took 10 shots on goal compared to Limestone's two.

Forward Ashley Reetz (Summerville, S.C.) took 10 of the Wolves' 26 shots including four on goal.

Newberry will look to snap its three game losing skid this Saturday, September 11, in Carrollton, Ga., as they take on the West Georgia Wolves.
