Wolves pick up second straight win, 1-0, over Lions

Box Score

NEWBERRY - An early goal by Newberry College senior Christen Chestnutt (Debary, Fla.) helped kick the Wolves to a 1-0 win over Mars Hill and improve their record to 2-1 in the South Atlantic Conference.

Chestnutt capitalized on an errant shot by teammate Ashley Reetz (Summerville, S.C.) that took Mars Hill (4-2-2, 1-1-2 SAC) goalie Chelsea Parker (Richmond, Va.) out of the box. Chestnutt then took a strike at goal that ricocheted off the top post but alertly put her own rebound in the back of the net for her first goal of the year at the 21 minute mark.

The goal was the only one Newberry (2-6, 2-1 SAC) would need to pick up its second straight victory while handing Mars Hill its first shutout of the season.

“We fought hard for this one,” said Newberry head coach Karrie Miller. “We're starting to string some things together and find our rhythm offensively. Momentum is definitely starting to swing our way but it's a long schedule still to play so we're going to have to focus and put in some hard work if we want to continue this upwards swing.”

The Wolves held tight on the defensive side of the ball, allowing just eight shots, three on goal, to one of the conference's top offenses with just two of those coming in the second period. The SAC's leading goal scorer, Abby Martin (Greer, S.C.), was held to just one shot on goal.

Newberry took a total of 12 shots during the contest with Chestnutt taking over half with seven. Chestnutt also took two of the team's four total shots on target.

Emily Rhoades (Buckley, Wash.) played the length of the match while saving three Mars Hill shots.

Newberry will look to make it three in a row as the scarlet and gray take on Tusculum (3-6, 0-3 SAC) this Saturday, Oct. 2, at 2 p.m.
