Newberry shuts out Anderson 2-0 to pick up first win of 2010

Box Score

NEWBERRY - A two goal performance by Newberry College sophomore Ashley Reetz (Summerville, S.C.) was all the Wolves needed as they cruised past the Anderson University Trojans, 2-0, for their first win of the 2010 season.

Reetz sent in her first goal of the season at the 12 minute mark with the help of teammates Megan Douglas (Bradford, West Yorkshire, England) and Christen Chestnutt (Debary, Fla.) to put Newberry (1-6, 1-1 South Atlantic Conference) up early.

It took the Wolves just two minutes into the second half to tally up their second goal of the contest as Reetz blew a shot past Anderson (3-4-1, 0-2 SAC) goalkeeper Kaitlin Neipp (Anderson, S.C.) for her second of the afternoon. Wolves Bianca Warder (Irmo, S.C.) and Amberly Fowler (Greenville, S.C.) picked up assists on the goal.

“It feels like we're starting to click,” said Newberry head coach Karrie Miller. “It feels great to get the win and it feels even better to get it in conference. It's all a credit to the girls and their hard work.”

The Wolves outshot the Trojans 17 to 13 and took a total of seven shots on goal compared to Anderson's six. Reetz led Newberry with her four shots, all of which were on target while Krystal Gross (Newry, S.C.) led Anderson with four shots as well, two of which were on goal.

Newberry goalie Emily Rhoades (Buckley, Wash.) saved five shots playing the full 90 minutes as did Neipp for the Trojans.

The Wolves will look to keep their winning ways going as they take on Mars Hill (3-3-1, 0-0-1 SAC) at home Wednesday, Sept. 29.
