NEWBERRY - The Newberry College men's soccer team fell, 2-0, to Lincoln Memorial in the second game of South Atlantic Conference competition for the Wolves.

Newberry (1-4-1, 0-1-1 SAC) gave up an early goal to Lincoln Memorial (4-0, 1-0 SAC) forward Jimmy Vandenhurk on a Greg Lewandowski cross and the

Railsplitters never looked back en route to handing the Wolves their first conference loss of the season.

Lincoln Memorial struck once more in the second half, this time on a Calum Calder shot from just outside the goalie box that flew past Newberry keeper Joel Johnson (Sangre Grande, Trinidad and Tobago) to put the game away for the Railsplitters.

“We came out flat but the second half was definitely a battle,” said Newberry head coach Sam Okpodu. “We gave them too easy of an opportunity to score in the first half and you just can't do that against a good team like Lincoln Memorial.”

The Wolves managed just two shots on goal during the matchup, one by freshman Brady Francis (Aiken, S.C.) and the other by sophomore Colt Priest (Marietta, Ga.).

“Our consistency with the youth on our team is just not there yet,” added Okpodu. Of the 17 players who saw action for Newberry, eight of them are freshmen.

“To come out and play one match well and then not the next just won't get things done in this league. You obviously always want to win your conference games but we'll regroup from this and the battle will go on.”

Johnson saved eight shots for the Wolves during the contest but dropped his overall record to 0-3 for the season.

Newberry will hit the road for its next two games. First up, a Sept. 22, game at Pfeiffer in Misenheimer, N.C., followed by a showdown against USC Aiken in Aiken, S.C., on Sept. 25.
