Box Score JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Newberry College women's soccer team wrapped up its 2010 regular season schedule with a 4-2 loss to South Atlantic Conference leading opponent Carson-Newman. The Wolves finished up the year going 4-12-1 overall and 4-5 in the SAC.
Newberry picked up the early lead on Carson-Newman (11-6, 8-1 SAC) after senior forward Christen Chestnutt (Debary, Fla.) punched in her third goal of the year. The shot came from a Jesse Langdon (Raleigh, N.C.) pass that ended up in the lower right corner of the net for a 1-0 Wolves lead at the 13 minute mark.
The Eagles then picked up back-to-back goals with Andrea Saevik (Froystadvaag, Norway) and Trenna Howell (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) both finding the back of the net. Saevik sent in a shot from 20 yards out in the 17th minute and Howell took a Morgan Gruenenfelder (Sweetwater, Tenn.) pass and scored from 10 yards away for the 2-1 lead in the 31st minute.
Wolves leading goal scorer Ashley Reetz (Summerville, S.C.) then tied up the game just before the half as she chipped a Langdon pass over Carson-Newman goalkeeper Sarah Tompkins (Franklin, Wis.) to knot the game at 2-all.
The Wolves couldn't carry the momentum into the second half, however, as the Eagles scored the game winner in the 49th minute on a Howell goal, her second of the game. Howell took a loose ball in front of the Newberry net and rolled it in for the score.
Gruenenfelder then put the finishing touches on the victory as she sent in a 10 yard shot after beating the Wolves defense for a 4-2 final.
Newberry took nine shots during the contest, five on goal, and were led by Chestnutt, Reetz and Amberly Fowler (Greenville, S.C.) who each had two. Howell and Gruenenfelder had five a piece for the Eagles.
Wolves' goalie Megan Hrenchir moved to 1-3-1 on the season as she played the full 90 minutes in goal, saving three shots.
Newberry will be taking part in the 2010 Food Lion SAC Tournament this week and awaits Sunday's announcement of the official tournament pairings.
