Box Score AIKEN - For the second straight game the Newberry College women's soccer team was handed defeat via a game winning goal scored in the last eight minutes. This one ended in a 2-0 loss to non-conference opponent USC Aiken.
Newberry (3-11) and USC Aiken (4-10-1) played to a 0-0 draw until the 82nd minute when a Madeline Fellabom (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) penalty kick found the back of the net for the game winner for the Pacers.
Katie Rumble (Aiken, S.C.) then took a loose ball that rebounded off the goal post and put it past Newberry goalie Emily Rhoades (Buckley, Wash.) in the 89th minute for the 2-0 win. Rhoades replaced Megan Hrenchir (Lawrence, Kan.) in front of the net after Hrenchir was red carded in the 82nd minute.
The Wolves faced a similar loss on Oct. 20, in Hickory, N.C., as South Atlantic Conference opponent Lenoir-Rhyne (11-1-1) scored with just 32 seconds remaining in the game to hand Newberry a 1-0 defeat.
Newberry fired off 16 shots during the contest, eight on goal, but couldn't sneak one past USC Aiken goalies Alli Edens (Lexington, S.C.) and Melissa Westphal (Springfield, Va.) who combined for eight saves. Amber Chase (Aiken, S.C.) led the scarlet and gray with five shots, two on goal, with teammate Ashley Reetz (Summerville, S.C.) right behind with four shots and three on goal.
The Pacers managed just nine total shots during the contest, six of those on target.
The Wolves return to conference play as they head to Brevard, N.C., to take on Brevard (3-11-1, 1-6 SAC) this Saturday, Oct. 23, at 1 p.m.
