Wolves drop road match to Lenoir-Rhyne, 3-1

Box Score

HICKORY, N.C. - Two early goals gave the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears all they needed as they eased past Newberry, 3-1, handing the Wolves their sixth straight loss.

Newberry (1-10-2, 0-5 South Atlantic Conference) allowed a Sean Rogers (Dublin, Ireland) goal in just the second minute of play, giving Lenoir-Rhyne (8-5, 3-3 SAC) a 1-0 lead that would last until halftime. The goal was Rogers' fourth of the year and came off an Oriol Cortes (Barcelona, Spain) corner kick that deflected off of teammate Nicky Mathews (Bradford, England).

Just two minutes into the second period the Bears struck again, this time on a ball that deflected off of a Newberry defender to make it 2-0.

Wolves senior David Contee (Sumter, S.C.) put Newberry back in contention with his first goal of the year at the 50 minute mark. Contee won the battle for the ball in front of the Lenoir-Rhyne net to put the Wolves within one.

But in the 68th minute Bears forward Nicky Matthews put the icing on the cake for Lenoir-Rhyne as he blasted an 18-yarder past Newberry goalie Patrick Sweatt (Indian Land, S.C.) for the 3-1 final.

The Wolves took just seven shots during the game, six on goal, with freshman Steven Harvey (Apopka, Fla.) and senior Nathan Arroyo (Atlanta, Ga.) leading the way with a pair each.

Lenoir-Rhyne won the game in the shots category as well, putting up 37 total and 20 on goal. Matthews led the Bears with eight shots, six on goal, while Rogers had seven and five on goal.

Sweatt, who played the length of the match in goal for Newberry, racked up 16 saves. Stefan Dill (Southampton, Bermuda) saved three for the Bears.

The Wolves will look to get back on the winning track as they host Anderson this Wednesday, Oct. 20, at 4 p.m in what will be the final home game of the year for Newberry.
