Wolves fall to Lenoir-Rhyne on last minute goal

Box Score

HICKORY, N.C. - A game winning goal with just 30 seconds left gave South Atlantic Conference leading Lenoir-Rhyne the 1-0 win over the Newberry College women's soccer team.

Newberry held the No. 7 ranked team in the Southeast region scoreless until Elizabeth Hawes (Valdese, N.C.) chipped a shot over Newberry (3-10, 3-4 SAC) goalie Megan Hrenchir (Lawrence, Kan.) in the 90th minute to break the 0-0 tie. Hawes' goal came off of a Kaelia Frazier (Cedar Falls, Iowa) pass from the right side of the field.

Hrenchir had saved seven of the eight Lenoir-Rhyne (11-1, 6-0 SAC) shots on goal until Hawes' game-winner.

The Wolves fired off just six shots during the game, three on goal, but couldn't put one past Bears goalkeeper Caitlin Scruggs (Torrance, Calif.), who saved three during the game.

Newberry was led offensively by Megan Douglas (Bradford, West Yorkshire, England), Ashley Reetz (Summerville, S.C.) and Kristen Stensholt (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia) who all had one shot on goal.

The Bears managed 22 total shots, 15 in the second half alone, during the win with Mariel Mena (Gainesville, Fla.) leading the way with five.

The Wolves will be on the road this Wednesday, Oct. 20, as they take on non-conference opponent USC Aiken in Aiken, S.C., at 5 p.m.
