Newberry bests Catawba with third straight shutout, 1-0

Box Score

NEWBERRY - The Newberry College women's soccer team notched another shutout and added another impressive victory to its résumé Wednesday afternoon by taking down South Atlantic Conference foe Catawba College, 1-0.

Newberry (8-2-1, 3-0-1 SAC) posted its third consecutive shutout to top Catawba (6-3-1, 1-1 SAC). Catawba entered the match with a 13-0-2 all-time record against the scarlet and gray but Newberry took advantage of Megan Douglas' (Bradford, West Yorkshire, England) first career goal and goalkeeper Emily Rhoades' (Buckley, Wash.) seventh shutout of the season to earn the school's first win over the Catawba Indians.

Catawba outshot Newberry 11 to 10, but Newberry posted five shots on goal to Catawba's three and the scarlet and gray edged Catawba in corner kicks, six to three.

Newberry entered the match ranked fifth in Southeast Region the latest edition of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division II poll, released this week.

Both teams spent the first portion of the first half looking for to take the lead. Newberry would find a hole in the defense and took advantage, capitalizing in the 36th minute when Megan Douglas launched a shot from outside the penalty area that found the right side of the net. The goal, the first of the sophomore's career, put Newberry up 1-0 going into the halftime break.

Newberry's defense entered shutdown mode in the second half, allowing seven shots but only letting one get to goalkeeper Emily Rhoades, who proved equal to the task and made the save.

Rhoades made three saves on the day to earn her seventh shutout of the season. The clean sheet adds to her possession of Newberry's single-season record for shutouts, which the sophomore broke with her blanking of Wingate on Saturday, September 26. She now stands at 12 for her career, just one short of tying Bobby Gainey's career mark of 13. Her record moves to 8-2-1 on the season.

Newberry did not score again in the match, but neither did Catawba and the match ended with the scarlet and gray on top, 1-0.

Newberry will look to continue its undefeated SAC record on the road against Tusculum College on Saturday, October 3. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.
