MARS HILL, N.C. - The Newberry men's soccer team put two goals on the board while looking for its first South Atlantic Conference win of the season, but the scores weren't enough and Newberry fell to Mars Hill College, 4-2.

Newberry (1-7-1, 0-2-0 SAC) allowed three goals in the second half to Mars Hill (2-5-2, 1-1-1 SAC) after leading going into halftime, 2-1. The scarlet and gray took 16 shots on the Lions, who tallied 23 shots of their own.

Newberry charged out of the gate, scoring first in the 10th minute of the match when Adrian Ochoa (East Point, Ga.) launched a shot from 15 yards out that beat Mars Hill goalkeeper Alex Huckabee to put Newberry ahead, 1-0. The goal marks Ochoa's third of the season, tying him with Marvin Torvic (French Guiana) for the team lead.

Newberry's lead proved short-lived, however. Mars Hill's Rury Caulfield capitalized on a free kick after Marvin Torvic was sent off in the 12th minute, scoring from 24 yards away to even the match, 1-1.

Both teams battled for the rest of the half looking for the next advantage on the scoreboard and Newberry would gain the upper hand. Following a yellow card in the penalty area given to Mars Hill's Gary Bajkowsky in the 42nd minute, Ben Mottel buried the ensuing penalty kick to put Newberry on top going into halftime, 2-1.

Mars Hill came out of the break with intentions of tying up the match again and succeeded in the 48th minute. Rury Caulfield notched his second of the day after Cody Langley tapped the ball to him on a free kick and Caulfield scored from 20 yards away, evening the score at 2-2.

Rury Caulfield would score again for the Lions, putting one past Newberry goalkeeper Joel Johnson (Sangre Grande, Trinidad & Tobago) from eight yards away in the 61st minute. Caulfield's goal would stand as the game-winner after Mars Hill added its final goal in the 68th minute with a Steven Bivens score off of a rebound.

Joel Johnson made nine saves in the match but his record falls to 1-7-1 after the loss. Colt Priest (Marietta, Ga.) and Francisco Espinoza (Brenham, Texas) led Newberry with three shots each and all three of Priest's shots were on goal.

Stephan Bass (Fayetteville, Ga.) received a red card in the 61st minute after receiving a yellow card in the 26th. Four players from Mars Hill received cautions in the match, as the Lions outfouled Newberry 14 to nine.

Newberry's next match finds the team returning home for an out-of-conference contest against USC Aiken on Wednesday, September 30. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m.
