Box Score

NEWBERRY - The Newberry College men's soccer team rallied from a one goal deficit at halftime against the No. 20 Wingate University Bulldogs, but the upset bid fell short and the scarlet and gray fell, 3-1.

Newberry (1-9-2, 0-4-0 SAC) scored in the 56th minute off of the foot of Adrian Ochoa (East Point, Ga.) to tie Wingate (7-1-0, 3-0-0 SAC; No. 20 NSCAA/adidas) 1-1, but the Bulldogs scored two more in the second half for the win.

Ochoa led the scarlet and gray in shots with three. Two of those counted as shots on goal. Marvin Torvic (French Guiana) recorded two shots in the match. Taylor Denny (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) and Ruyter Rodrigues (Marietta, Ga.) tallied Newberry's other two shots on goal with one each.

Trailing 1-0 in the second half, Newberry found its equalizer in the 56th minute. After several attempts to shoot through the Wingate defense, Adrian Ochoa collected the ball on the right corner of the penalty box and launched an arching shot that found the left side of the net and tied the match, 1-1.

Unfortunately for Newberry, Wingate would break the tie with two goals and held on for the 3-1 win.

Newberry goalkeeper Joel Johnson (Sangre Grande, Trinidad and Tobago) made seven saves in the match. His record falls to 1-8-2.

Wingate scored first in the match, netting a goal in the 34th minute when Junior Nyemb crossed a ball into the penalty area that Luke Mulholland chipped over the outstretched arm of Joel Johnson.

Newberry put two shots on goal to Wingate's three in the first half. Ochoa put a shot on goal from the right side in the fourth minute, but Wingate goalkeeper Joey Calandra made the save to help give Wingate the lead going into halftime, 1-0.

After Ochoa's goal, both teams battled on the muddy field for the lead. The tie lasted 10 minutes, broken when Wingate's Luke Mulholland scored his second of the game. Taking a loose ball in the penalty area in the 66th minute, Mulholland found the back of the net and put the Bulldogs up, 2-1.

Mulholland netted an insurance goal for Wingate in the 86th minute to ice the win. Paulo Brunetto crossed a ball in front of the net and Mulholland chipped the ball in, giving him the hat trick and giving his team a 3-1 lead.

Wingate amassed two yellow cards in the match. Paul Gallagher received one in the 63rd minute and Luke Mulholland received one in the 65th. Newberry's Colt Priest received the scarlet and gray's only caution for a challenge in the waning seconds of the match.

Newberry will take a break from South Atlantic Conference play when it heads to Francis Marion for a match on Friday, October 9. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
