Box Score NEWBERRY - The Newberry College women's soccer team kept up its winning ways by picking up its fifth victory in a row, capitalizing on a second half goal to take down the Chowan University Hawks, 2-1.
Newberry (13-3-1, 5-1-1 SAC) scored a goal in each half to defeat Chowan (5-12-0). Michaela Peach (Tadcaster, N. Yorkshire, England) picked up her sixth goal of the season in the first half and Katie Sas (Columbia, S.C.) headed in the eventual game-winner in the second stanza to give Newberry the win.
The win pushes Newberry's win streak to five, the longest in program history. The team did go unbeaten for five games last year with a 4-0-1 streak, but this marks the first time Newberry has five consecutive wins. The victory marks Newberry's 13th of the season, tying the most wins in a season, set when the scarlet and gray racked up 13 wins in 2004.
Newberry outshot Chowan 29 to five, including holding Chowan without a shot in the first half. Newberry also took 15 shots on goal to Chowan's one. Both the shot and shot on goal count mark season highs for Newberry. Laura Mottel (North Augusta, S.C.) led the scarlet and gray in shots with five while Ashley Reetz (Summerville, S.C.) led Newberry in shots on goal with three.
In a 1-1 deadlock with just over 13 minutes left in regulation, Newberry took advantage of a corner kick to regain its lead and come away with the win. Sara Geisman (Middleburg Heights, Ohio) sent in a cross from a corner kick that Katie Sas rose to meet and headed past Chowan goalkeeper Kristy Brown to put Newberry on top, 2-1. The goal marks Sas' third of the season.
Newberry struck early in the first half, converting on a scoring chance in the 13th minute. Lora Moore (Raleigh, N.C.) crossed a ball into the penalty area that Michaela Peach put in the back of the net to give Newberry the lead, 1-0. The goal gives Peach six on the year, breaking what was a three-way tie with Laura Mottel and Amberly Fowler (Greenville, S.C.) for the team lead. The scarlet and gray took the 1-0 lead into halftime.
Chowan, shotless through the first 45 minutes, found the net in the 60th minute to even the score. Alisha Terry corralled a ball, took off on a breakaway and launched a shot that found the left side of the net, tying the match, 1-1.
Katie Sas' goal in the 77th minute would prove to be enough to put Chowan away.
Goalkeeper Emily Rhoades (Buckley, Wash.) picked up her 13th win of the season. Her record now stands at 13-3-1.
Newberry will play its final nonconference game of the regular season when the team hosts Lander University on Wednesday, October 28. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
