Newberry drops match to Lenoir-Rhyne, 2-0

NEWBERRY - The Newberry College men's soccer team took to its home field in hopes of putting together its first back-to-back wins of the season, but Lenoir-Rhyne University proved too much and the scarlet and gray fell, 2-0.

Newberry (2-11-2, 1-5-0 SAC) gave up a goal in each period to fall to Lenoir-Rhyne (7-4-3, 3-1-2 SAC). Newberry edged Lenoir-Rhyne in corner kicks, with a five to four advantage, but couldn't find a goal.

Newberry goalkeeper Joel Johnson (Sangre Grande, Trinidad & Tobago) made one save in the match before being replaced by Pedro Velazquez (Newburgh, N.Y.) in the 30th minute. Velazquez made six saves but allowed two goals and saw his record fall to 0-2-0.

Tornubari Nyonebue (Rivers State, Nigeria) led Newberry with three shots. Nyonebue, Ryan King (Surfside Beach, S.C.) and Adrian Ochoa (East Point, Ga.) each had a shot on goal for the scarlet and gray.

Newberry battled for the first goal of the match but the Bears would find the net first. Brendan Howard scored his first of the day in the 36th minute, taking a Gary Higgins free kick and shooting it in to give Lenoir-Rhyne the lead going into halftime, 1-0.

Lenoir-Rhyne struck again shortly after halftime, and again Brendan Howard scored for the Bears. Oriol Cortes sent a ball upfield to John Ferguson, who crossed it into the penalty area and found Howard for a 2-0 Lenior-Rhyne lead and what would be the match's final goal.

Newberry looked to climb back in during the final portion of the second half, taking six shots in the second stanza and trying to shoot through the defensive setup of Lenoir-Rhyne, but the Bears would hold the lead.

Joel Johnson, Colt Priest (Marietta, Ga.) and Ryan King each received a yellow card for Newberry. Oriol Cortes, Jeffrey Marks and John Ferguson each received yellow cards for Lenoir-Rhyne.

Newberry will stay at home for its next match, the second half of a Newberry soccer doubleheader against Pfeiffer University on Wednesday, October 21. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m.
