Newberry women's soccer drops match to Barry

Box Score

NEWBERRY - Returning home after a two game road trip to Florida, the Newberry College women's soccer team (0-3) faced Barry University (2-1). The scarlet and gray were unable to capitalize on their home turf as they fell to the Buccaneers, 2-0.

Newberry fell behind in the 28th minute as Barry's Allie Llaneras (Miami Springs, Fla.) placed a penalty kick in the right corner of the goal out of reach of freshman goalkeeper Emily Rhoades (Buckley, Wash.).

Despite out-shooting the Buccaneers in the first half, the scarlet and gray would finish the first half with a 1-0 deficit.

The second half appeared to be in Newberry's favor as they were awarded a penalty kick in the 48th minute. Unfortunately, sophomore midfielder Amberly Fowler (Taylors, S.C.) was unable to finish the opportunity as the Buccaneer's goalkeeper Sami Cromartie (Plantation, Fla.) blocked the attempt and the ball bounced off the crossbar.

The Buccaneers would increase their lead in the 60th minute from a goal by Michelle Tarasiuk (Miami, Fla.). Tarasiuk delivered a long shot from 40 yards out that barely fit under the crossbar and over Rhoades.

The final 30 minutes were a hard fought battle as Newberry was unwilling to allow the Buccaneers defeat them without a fight. However this was not to be the home game that Newberry was dreaming of as the hosts were unable to find the back of the net.

Newberry will hit the road for its next two matches, this time traveling to Carrollton, Ga., to compete in the Wolves Invitational. The scarlet and gray will duel against North Alabama on Sept. 12 at 2:30 p.m. and the host team West Georgia on Sept. 14 at 1 p.m.
