Box Score NEWBERRY - The Newberry College men's soccer team (2-6-0, 2-1-0 SAC) moved into a tie for first place in the South Atlantic Conference as it won, 2-0, over Mars Hill (5-4-0, 1-2-0 SAC) on Saturday afternoon.
The deciding goal came in the 59th minute as senior forward Debola Ogunseye (Lagos, Nigeria) dribbled down the right sideline and passed the ball to fellow senior midfielder Brandon Baker (Conway, S.C.), who then set up an unmarked freshman midfielder Trey Boyd (Victoria, Texas) for the easy score.
Newberry would secure the win in the 77th minute with a similar goal as Ogunseye once again set up he crossed the ball in front of the goal to senior forward Kwame Gyamfi (Accra, Ghana) who flicked the ball to junior midfielder Nathan Arroyo (Atlanta, Ga.) for the scarlet and gray's second easy goal of the game.
For the rest of the game, Newberry was determined to run time off the clock as they possessed the ball throughout the remaining 13 minutes.
By running out the rest of the clock, Newberry secured its first shutout of the season as senior goalkeeper Will Dieterich (Tampa, Fla.) improved his record to 2-5 on the season.
Newberry's next game comes against Lander University on October 1 at 7 p.m. as the scarlet and gray travels to Greenwood, S.C. to battle the Bearcats.
