Newberry moves into first place in SAC with 5-1 win over Brevard

Box Score

BREVARD, N.C. - The Newberry College women's soccer team (3-5-0, 2-1-0 SAC) moved into first place in the South Atlantic Conference with its second conference win as the scarlet and gray defeated the Brevard Tornados (4-5-0, 0-2-0 SAC) 5-1.

From the opening whistle Newberry looked as if it was on its way to an easy victory as freshman midfielder Lora Moore (Raleigh, N.C.) scored in the third minute of play. Moore received a pass from junior midfielder Sara Griffith (Marietta, Ga.) and attempted a shot that was blocked. Luckily for Moore the shot rebounded off the keeper and her second attempt for a goal was successful.

Newberry continued the offensive first half attack as they bombarded the Tornados' goalkeeper with 12 shots in the half; forcing the keeper to make six saves. Despite the attack, Newberry was unable to score another goal before time expired in the first half.

The scarlet and gray opened the second half with a bang as senior forward Mandi Butler (Holly Springs, N.C.) scored 22 seconds into the half. Butler dribbled the ball through the Brevard defense and buried her shot into the net to give Newberry the 2-0 lead.

Sophomore forward Amberly Fowler (Taylors, S.C.) got into the scoring act in the 54th minute off a corner kick. A corner kick from junior defender Sara Geisman (Middleburg Heights, Ohio) sailed over the Brevard defense and to the feet of Fowler, who easily scored her second goal of the season which put Newberry up, 3-0.

Butler would strike again; this time in the 66th minute. Butler headed a cross from Griffith that bounced on the ground before slipping past the Tornados' keeper to give Newberry the 4-0 lead.

Newberry was unable to keep Brevard from joining in on the scoring as the Tornados would get on the scoreboard in the 70th minute on a direct kick from Ashley Fincher (Burns, Tenn.) that sailed over freshman goalkeeper Emily Rhoades (Buckley, Wash.) and under the crossbar to minimize Newberry's lead to 4-1.

The scarlet and gray would extend their lead back to four as senior midfielder Najla Bubtana (Miami, Fla.) scored on a direct kick from the left side of the field in the 87th minute. The 5-1 score would end up being the final score as Newberry moved into first place in the SAC with six points and Brevard dropped their second SAC game.

Rhoades notched her third victory of the season as she improves her record to 3-5-0 and a 2-1-0 record in the SAC.

The scarlet and gray will return home to the Newberry Soccer Complex and will try to extend their lead in the SAC as they take on the Wingate Bulldogs at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
