Box Score

BREVARD, N.C. - With an imminent thunderstorm approaching the soccer pitch, theNewberryCollege men's soccer team (1-3-0, 1-0-0 SAC) was able to weather theBrevardCollege Tornados (0-4-1, 0-1-0 SAC) and leave North Carolina with a 6-1 victory.

Junior defender Scott Busbee (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) began Newberry's scoring in the 13th minute as the Brevard defense was unable to effectively clear the ball from their defensive area after a corner kick by freshman midfielder Trey Boyd (Victoria,Texas). Attacking the free ball, Busbee shot the ball through the defense and into the back of the net giving the scarlet and gray a 1-0 lead.

The first half scoring continued for Newberry eight minutes later in the 21st minute as sophomore defender Lucas Noboa (Deltona,Fla.) chipped the ball over the defense leaving junior midfielder Nathan Arroyo (Atlanta,Ga.) all alone in front of the goal for an easy goal, extending Newberry's lead to 2-0.

After halftime the scarlet and gray offense seemed well rested as they came out ready to increase their lead against the Tornados. Boyd teamed with senior forward Debola Ogunseye (Lagos, Nigeria) in the 62nd minute to widen the scoring gap to 3-0. Off a breakaway down the right side of the pitch, Ogunseye crossed the ball to the unmarked Boyd on the left side, who easily scored his fifth goal of the season.

Not to be undone by Boyd, Ogunseye tallied a goal of his own two minutes later off a through ball from junior midfielder Ben Mottel (North Augusta,S.C.). The pass from Mottel penetrated the defensive backline allowing Ogunseye to run onto the ball and beat Brevard's freshman goalkeeper Jerry Hatsady (Orlando,Fla.).

Leading 4-0, Newberry wasn't deterred from letting off the scoring attack as they would score twice more in the game. Ogunseye used his blinding speed to break through the Tornado defense in the 68th minute and score on a breakaway down the left side of the field.

Brevard broke up Newberry's vie for their first shutout of the season as Miika Kastarinen (Jyvasleyla, Finland) scored in the 73rd minute on an assist from Henri Erti (Kangasala, Finland).

Freshman midfielder Ryan Fielden (Tega Cay, S.C.) joined in on the scoring in the 81st minute on an unassisted goal as his shot from 25 yards out sailed into the back of the net.

Newberry will try to surpass its scoring performance against the Tornados in the next game as the scarlet and gray face off against USC Aiken. Kickoff on Sept. 13 is set for 7 p.m. at USCA's Pacer Pit.
