Newberry College women's soccer falls to Lynn, 4-1

Box Score

BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Newberry College women's soccer team will return home without a victory as they lost to the Lynn Fighting Knights, 4-1, on a rainy, windy day.

Lynn's Molly Anderson (North Lauderdale, Fla.) led off the scoring in the 22nd minute as she combined with Amanda Romeo-Gallo (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) on a cross that she headed into the back of the net. Melissa Ortiz (Wellington, Fla.) would also garner an assist on the play as she initial feed the ball to Romeo-Gallo. Ortiz would score a goal of her own as she dribbled through the defense to score an unassisted goal in the 26th minute.

Newberry would cut the score in half as junior forward Lindsey Landgrebe (Springfield, Ill.) would score three minutes later on an unassisted goal in the 29th minute. The scarlet and gray battled with the Knights for the rest of the first half as the scored remained 2-1 as the first half expired.

Coming out of halftime just a goal down, Newberry would be unable to capitalize on their late first half goal. Collecting a long outlet pass from Sarah Mendelsberg (Englewood, Colo.) in the 57th minute, the freshman push hard towards the goal and chipped in her second score of the game.

Ortiz continued her scoring effort as she compiled a hat trick as she scored her third goal in the 88th minute. Taking a pass from Anderson across the length of the field, she beat freshman goalkeeper Emily Rhoades (Buckley, Wash.) one-on-one before blasting the shot into the back of the net.

Rhoades had five saves on the day. Lynn's keeper, Natalie Feller (Merritt Island, Fla.), stopped three shots in her first win of the season.

Newberry returns home this week looking for its first win of the season in the scarlet and gray's home opener against the Barry University Buccaneers on Sept. 5 at 5 p.m.
