Newberry defeated by Catawba 1-0 in SAC Tounament

Box Score

SALISBURY, N.C. - The No. 2 seeded Catawba College (14-4-1, 6-1-1 SAC) advanced past No. 7 seeded Newberry College women's soccer team (8-9-1, 4-4 SAC) with a 1-0 victory in the First Round of the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Women's Soccer Tournament.

The deciding moment of the game came in the 73rd minute when Paige Harrington (Albemarle, N.C.) scored on a header deflection to give the Catawba Indians the late 1-0 lead. The deflection was set up by a direct kick, which resulted from a foul on Newberry in Catawba's attacking half.

Despite the late goal, the scarlet and gray continued to battle and try to tie the match. Newberry had three corner kicks in the final 12 minutes of the match, but were unable to come away with the equalizing goal.

Senior Lauren Carbonell (Miami, Fla.) had her shot saved by Catawba goalkeeper Lindsay Webster (Hopkinton, Mass.) in the 76th minute, which was Newberry's final shot on goal in the match.

The first half was a battle between the two teams as neither team could muster a goal as the teams combined for only five shots with only shot on frame.

Newberry doubled the Catawba Indians' in shots during the second half, but were unable to find the back of the net despite their heightened shot advantage.

Freshman goalkeeper Emily Rhoades (Buckley, Washington) had one save in the game as her season record finished at 8-9-1. Webster had two saves for Catawba in the victory.

This is the second time this season that Catawba has defeated the scarlet and gray 1-0. On September 20th, Catawba defeated Newberry with an early goal by Lena Suarez (Charlotte, N.C.).

Catawba advances to face Wingate University on Friday, Nov. 7th in the semifinals of the SAC Women's Soccer Tournament in Rock Hill, S.C. at the Manchester Meadows soccer complex. Wingate defeated Lincoln Memorial University, 2-0, earlier in the day.
