Newberry loses regular season finale to Carson-Newman, 1-0

Box Score

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Newberry College women's soccer team (8-8-1, 4-4-0 SAC) fell in its final game of the regular season, 1-0, to Carson-Newman (13-5-0, 7-1-0 SAC). The scarlet and gray will have to play on the road in the First Round of the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament on Tuesday.

The victory clinched the 2008 regular season SAC title for Carson-Newman, which has won four regular season titles in the last six years.

At halftime neither team had scored, even though both teams possessed the ball with lots of offensive pressure. Newberry was outshot 8-2 in the first half by Carson-Newman.

The deciding goal came in the 55th minute of the game as senior Brittany Moore (Lenoir City, Tenn.) placed the ball into the left hand corner of the net on a cross served by sophomore Morgan Gruenenfelder (Sweetwater, Tenn.).

For the remainder of the game was a battle between the two SAC teams. The scarlet and gray were barely outshot by the Eagles 7-6 in the second half, which created an equal playing field.

Freshman goalkeeper Emily Rhoades (Buckley, Wash.) collected ten saves in the loss as her record fell to 8-8-1 on the season. Eagles goalkeeper Lauren MacKenzie (Barrie, Ontario) recorded seven saves in the victory.

Newberry's opponent and time of the match will be announced tomorrow by the South Atlantic Conference office.

Carson-Newman will take on Mars Hill College in the first round of the South Atlantic Conference Tournament. The time of the game will be determined Sunday.
