Newberry increases win streak to four with 1-0 victory over Tusculum

Box Score

NEWBERRY - The Newberry College women's soccer team (6-5-0, 4-1-0 SAC) continued their win streak as they defeated the Tusculum Pioneers (5-5-1, 2-2-0 SAC), 1-0. The win gave the scarlet and gray a six point lead in the South Atlantic Conference and extended its win streak to four games.

The first half was evenly played as neither team scored. Tusculum almost scored late in the 45th minute, but freshman goalkeeper Emily Rhoades (Buckley, Wash.) saved a goal-scoring opportunity from Danielle Tanner (Toronto, Ontario). The shot ricocheted off Rhoades for a Pioneers corner and salvaged the tie game for Newberry.

Senior forward Lauren Carbonell (Miami, Fla.) would give Newberry the 1-0 lead in the 59th minute as she scored off a rebound on a shot from freshman midfielder Allie Johns (Lexington, S.C.). The goal was Carbonell's third of the season.

For the remainder of the game, Newberry's defense was solid as it minimized the scoring opportunities for the visiting Pioneers. The defense has not allowed a goal in the last two games.

Rhoades had a tremendous game in goal as she had a career high 11 saves. Tallying her third career shutout, Rhoades improved her season record to 6-5.

The SAC leading scarlet and gray will return to action when they face off against Lander on the road. Kick off is set for 4:30 pm on Wednesday, Oct. 8.
