Box Score GREENWOOD - The Newberry College women's soccer team (8-7-1, 4-3-0 SAC) won their fourth non-conference game of the season with a 2-0 victory overLanderUniversity (6-7-1) with two-late second half goals.
Freshman Allie Johns (Lexington, S.C.) netted the game-winning goal in the 79th minute as she connected with the ball after a shot from fellow freshman Meagan Heney (Ajax,Canada) was deflected in front of the goal. The goal was Johns' fifth of the season as she leads Newberry with five goals.
Newberry secured the road victory when senior Najla Bubtana (Miami, Fla.) headed in a long pass from junior Sara Geisman (Middleburg Heights, Ohio) in the 88th minute. The goal, which was Bubtana's second of the season, gave Newberry the 2-0 lead.
The scarlet and gray out shot the Bearcats 17-7 in the game and led in corner kicks with a 5-2 advantage.
Freshman goalkeeper Emily Rhoades secured her fifth shutout of the season as she recorded four saves in the game. She improved her record to 8-7-1 on the season.
Newberry faces Carson-Newman in their final regular season contest on November 1 at 6 p.m. inJefferson City,Tenn.Newberry will have a chance to clinch a home game in the First Round of the South Atlantic Conference Tournament with a victory over the Eagles.
