Box Score NEWBERRY - The Newberry women's soccer team (6-6-1, 4-2-0 SAC) played their second-consecutive overtime game, but were unable to capture the win as they fell 2-1 toLincolnMemorialUniversity (10-1-1, 3-1-0 SAC).
Newberry led off the scoring as freshman Allie Johns (Lexington,S.C.) teamed with Lora Moore (Raleigh,N.C.) and Michaela Peach (Tadcaster,England) in the opening minute of the game. The trio used a quick combination of passes that set up an unmarked Johns, who shot the ball over Railsplitters' goalkeeper Denise de Resende (Taguatina,Brazil) and into the back of the net.
Lincoln Memorial would tie the game in the 22nd minute as Becky Thompson (Frederick,Md.) stole the ball from the Newberry defense and scored on a breakaway to tie the game at 1-1.
The two teams would be unable to muster another goal in regulation and would have to play another period to decide the game.
The deciding goal came in the 98th minute as Leanne Reid (Aberdeen,Scotland) connected on a cross from Thompson. Reid was able to reroute the ball with her body into the net to give the Railsplitters the overtime victory.
Freshman goalkeeper Emily Rhoades had four saves in the game as her record went to 6-6-1 on the year. The Railsplitters' goal in the 22nd minute ended a streak of 315 minutes that Rhoades and the Newberry defense had held opponents scoreless.
The scarlet and gray travels to Hickory, N.C. for their next South Atlantic Conference match as they will try to defeat Lenoir-Rhyne on their home turf. Kick off for the game is set for 5:30 p.m. this Saturday.
